Dr Richard Cleminson
Senior Lecturer in Spanish

I wrote my PhD thesis on the history of eugenics in Spain and am interested in the history of sexuality in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. I am also interested in the reception of discourses on sexuality and science in workers’ movements. Finally, I am interested in the overlap between sexuality and technology.
Research Interests
The History of Sexuality in Spain, 1850 to the present; the anarchist movement in Spain ; the history of male homosexuality; eugenics; nudism; technology and sexuality and intersexuality/hermaphroditism. I have just finished researching towards a book on the science of hermaphroditism in Spain (with Francisco Vázquez García, University of Cadiz, Spain). My next project is a history of eugenics in Portugal. I have close links with the Universities of Cadiz, Oviedo and Granada in Spain.
Teaching
As well as teaching modules on contemporary Spanish history, I teach on the history of sexuality in Spain and Latin America.
