Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies

European NOISE Network

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies is part of the European NOISE network.

NOISE stands for ‘Network Of Interdisciplinary Women's Studies in Europe’, although it is important to note that it includes gender studies as well as women’s studies. It originates in the framework of the ERASMUS programme on Higher Education, which is part of the SOCRATES programme of the European Union.

The network facilitates staff and student exchanges between partner institutions and an annual summer school. The summer school is an outstanding opportunity to meet gender students and professors from all over Europe and experience intense learning and discussion at an advanced level.

The NOISE summer school is held in a different, and usually historically significant, location in Europe each year during August. It runs for two weeks and offers courses on European Women's and Gender Studies from multicultural and interdisciplinary perspectives, taught in two clusters focusing on themes like Feminist Theory, Women's History, Feminist Literary Theory, Cultural Studies and State & (In)equality.

The courses are taught by lecturers from different European universities on their specialist research areas and discussion on themes raised take place in small tutorial groups. PhD students also attend workshops where the lecturers on the course offer advise and guidance on the students’ own research. The language of the summer school is English.

Each year, two (partly) funded places are open to Leeds MA or PhD students from the EU. The EU funds fees and accommodation. Students must fund their flight and subsistence (usually costing between £500-£600). Other students may also attend but must pay the full cost. Typical destinations include Bologna (Italy), Granada (Spain), Linkoeping (Sweden) and Utrecht, (The Netherlands).
